Matthew cites the paintings of 19th Century artist Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt as being very influential, as well as contemporary artists Joseph P. McGurl, Robert Bateman and the late Paco Young.

Matthew's paintings have garned awards in Landscape, Wildlife and Sporting Art. His Landscapes have been part of solo and juried group exhibitions including the Salmagundi Club New York, the Copley Society, Boston, Mystic Maritime Gallery, Mystic CT, the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum, Wassau WI and the Cape cod Museum of Art, Dennis MA.

In 2006 his depiction of a Goldeneye decoy was selected as 2007 Massachusetts Waterfowl Stamp and in 2007 his painting of a Great Blue Heron was included in the prestigious Birds in Art exhibit at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum, Wassau WI.
