Figawi Race Paintings

In the 2009 Figawi Race the day started off stormy with high winds and heavy seas. What drew me into painting this scene was the incredible contrast of water, sky and boat, hence the title "Contrasts Of The Day".

The water in this painting depicts the up-welling of color produced by the wake of the boat I was on, Bottom Line, contrasted against the stormy surf as the Chippewa, Newport RI, plows it's way towards Nantucket. As we made our way past Chippewa the sun began to break through the clouds illuminating the sail with a pink glow and making the wake sparkle like a jewel, giving it that "pop" of light it so desperately needed.
